Climate engineering is a term coined by the Global Commons Institute to mean "the sundry assortment of proposals to, for example, deflect solar radiation with mirrors or seed the oceans with massive amounts of iron filings." Under all of the proposed scenarios, a new massive alteration would be made in the global climate system, with the aim of offsetting or reducing the consequences of fossil fuel- and deforestation-driven global climate change. These are also referred to collectively as a climate techno-fix mindset.
According to the GCI, "such proposals all have the characteristics that they are profitable, risk global-scale catastrophic side-effects, and divert everyone's attention from the essential need to reduce (the causes of climate change)." Extensive analysis of these options were undertaken by Ben Matthews and David Keith in particular, with the conclusion that no such 'fixes' could be deemed feasible. Additionally, Matthews found extensive funding for climate engineering researchers came from the fossil fuel industry and others who benefit from the industrial status quo.
Advocates of chemtrail theory assert that systematic aerial dumping operations to alter the climate are already underway. There is no scientific evidence to support these conspiratorial claims.
