Chili, New York

Chili is a town located in Monroe County, New York. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 27,638. The name Chili was chosen due to sympathy for the revolution for independence in Chile (Chili was the contemporary spelling).

The Town of Chili was established in 1822 from part of the Town of Riga.

Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 103.4 km² (39.9 mi²). 103.0 km² (39.8 mi²) of it is land and 0.5 km² (0.2 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.48% water.

Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 27,638 people, 10,159 households, and 7,558 families residing in the town. The population density is 268.5/km² (695.4/mi²). There are 10,466 housing units at an average density of 101.7/km² (263.3/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 91.14% White, 5.71% African American, 0.24% Native American, 1.12% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 0.52% from other races, and 1.25% from two or more races. 1.65% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 10,159 households out of which 34.7% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 61.7% are married couples living together, 9.1% have a female householder with no husband present, and 25.6% are non-families. 20.2% of all households are made up of individuals and 7.5% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.67 and the average family size is 3.09.

In the town the population is spread out with 25.6% under the age of 18, 8.6% from 18 to 24, 29.4% from 25 to 44, 24.2% from 45 to 64, and 12.1% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 37 years. For every 100 females there are 94.9 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 91.4 males.

The median income for a household in the town is $55,097, and the median income for a family is $61,481. Males have a median income of $45,156 versus $29,903 for females. The per capita income for the town is $23,887. 3.6% of the population and 2.0% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 3.7% of those under the age of 18 and 2.5% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.

  • Chili Center -- The largest community in the town is west of the Rochester airport.
  • Genesee River -- Part of the east border of the town.
  • Maplewood -- a community on the east side of Chili Center.
  • North Chili -- a hamlet in the northwest part of the town and home to Roberts Wesleyan College.
