History
The Town of Chester was formed from part of the Town of Thurman in 1799.
Geography
Chester is in the Adirondack State Park, and the north town line is the border of Essex County, New York.
According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 225.6 km² (87.1 mi²). 218.8 km² (84.5 mi²) of it is land and 6.8 km² (2.6 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 3.03% water.
Demographics
As of the census2 of 2000, there are 3,614 people, 1,280 households, and 889 families residing in the town. The population density is 16.5/km² (42.8/mi²). There are 2,418 housing units at an average density of 11.1/km² (28.6/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 97.73% White, 0.19% African American, 0.14% Native American, 0.64% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.36% from other races, and 0.94% from two or more races. 1.05% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 1,280 households out of which 26.9% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 57.7% are married couples living together, 8.7% have a female householder with no husband present, and 30.5% are non-families. 24.8% of all households are made up of individuals and 11.7% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.43 and the average family size is 2.90.
In the town the population is spread out with 19.9% under the age of 18, 18.3% from 18 to 24, 21.8% from 25 to 44, 24.5% from 45 to 64, and 15.5% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 37 years. For every 100 females there are 96.7 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 93.7 males.
