Chatham is a town located in Columbia County, New York. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 4,249.
The Town of Chatham has a village also called Chatham on its south town line.
Geography
The north town line is the border of Rensselaer County, New York.
According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 138.7 km² (53.5 mi²). 138.0 km² (53.3 mi²) of it is land and 0.7 km² (0.3 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.50% water.
Demographics
As of the census2 of 2000, there are 4,249 people, 1,762 households, and 1,196 families residing in the town. The population density is 30.8/km² (79.8/mi²). There are 2,110 housing units at an average density of 15.3/km² (39.6/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 96.00% White, 1.74% Black or African American, 0.21% Native American, 0.71% Asian, 0.16% Pacific Islander, 0.16% from other races, and 1.01% from two or more races. 0.75% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 1,762 households out of which 29.4% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 56.1% are married couples living together, 8.3% have a female householder with no husband present, and 32.1% are non-families. 25.1% of all households are made up of individuals and 8.3% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.41 and the average family size is 2.87.
