Entering Imperial service, Charles led the imperial contingent in the army which relieved Vienna and Hungary from the Turks in 1683.
His ordinal was Charles V of Lorraine and he was younger brother of Ferdinand Philip of Lorraine who died 20 years old in 1659, and at that point he inherited his aunt's Duchy of Bar.
His wife Archduchess Eleanor of Austria, Dowager Queen of Poland, in her issue succeeded in the inheritance of the Gonzaga Mantua.
He had several children, amongst whom was Leopold Joseph of Lorraine, who would recover the duchy to the family in 1697.
