Chandler, Minnesota

Chandler is a city located in Murray County, Minnesota. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 276.

Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 2.1 km² (0.8 mi²). 2.1 km² (0.8 mi²) of it is land and none of it is covered by water.

On June 16, 1992, Chandler was struck by a devastating F5 tornado that completely destroyed half of the town, most of which has since been rebuilt.

Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 276 people, 113 households, and 72 families residing in the city. The population density is 131.6/km² (342.7/mi²). There are 121 housing units at an average density of 57.7/km² (150.2/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 97.46% White, 0.00% African American, 0.00% Native American, 0.00% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 1.81% from other races, and 0.72% from two or more races. 17.39% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 113 households out of which 24.8% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 57.5% are married couples living together, 3.5% have a female householder with no husband present, and 35.4% are non-families. 33.6% of all households are made up of individuals and 26.5% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.44 and the average family size is 3.14.

In the city the population is spread out with 24.6% under the age of 18, 8.7% from 18 to 24, 19.2% from 25 to 44, 20.3% from 45 to 64, and 27.2% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 43 years. For every 100 females there are 102.9 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 87.4 males.

The median income for a household in the city is $26,875, and the median income for a family is $38,542. Males have a median income of $30,417 versus $20,000 for females. The per capita income for the city is $16,134. 15.1% of the population and 6.8% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 27.3% of those under the age of 18 and 14.0% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
