Champlin is a city located in Hennepin County, Minnesota. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 22,193.

Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 22.8 km² (8.8 mi²). 21.2 km² (8.2 mi²) of it is land and 1.6 km² (0.6 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 7.05% water.

History

The settlement of the Champlin area began when Father Louis Hennepin, a Franciscan priest from whom Hennepin County, Minnesota gets its name, Michael Accult and Peter Dulay were captured by the Sioux Indians. An Indian trading post was eventually established in the area. Charles Miles created the first permanent settlement in what came to be called the Marshall Township. In 1859, it was split into two towns, Champlin and Dayton. Champlin gets its name from U.S. Navy Commodore Stephen Champlin, who fought in the war of 1812 and helped establish the boundary between the United States and Canada.

Government

As of 2004, the Mayor of Champlin is Steve Boynton. He serves on the Champlin City Council along with the current Wards, Julia Whalen, Mark Uglem, Joan Molenaar, and Chris Goodman.

Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 22,193 people, 7,425 households, and 5,925 families residing in the city. The population density is 1,047.5/km² (2,713.9/mi²). There are 7,514 housing units at an average density of 354.7/km² (918.8/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 95.01% White, 1.41% African American, 0.43% Native American, 1.65% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 0.37% from other races, and 1.10% from two or more races. 1.13% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 7,425 households out of which 50.5% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 67.4% are married couples living together, 8.6% have a female householder with no husband present, and 20.2% are non-families. 14.9% of all households are made up of individuals and 2.6% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.99 and the average family size is 3.35.

In the city the population is spread out with 33.6% under the age of 18, 7.0% from 18 to 24, 38.4% from 25 to 44, 17.4% from 45 to 64, and 3.7% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 32 years. For every 100 females there are 101.5 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 99.4 males.

The median income for a household in the city is $65,831, and the median income for a family is $68,890. Males have a median income of $45,390 versus $32,277 for females. The per capita income for the city is $24,041. 2.5% of the population and 2.3% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 3.5% of those under the age of 18 and 0.8% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
