Centerville, New York

Centerville is a town located in Allegany County, New York. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 762. The town is named after its principal settlement.

The Town of Centerville is in the northwest corner of the Allegany County.

History

The area was first settled around 1808. Centerville was established in 1819 from part of the Town of Pike (at that time the name was spelled "Centreville"). In recent years many Amish farmers have bought up land in the town.

Geography

The west town line is the border of Cattaraugus County, New York, and the north town line is the border of Wyoming County, New York.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 91.7 km² (35.4 mi²). 91.7 km² (35.4 mi²) of it is land and 0.03% is water.

Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 762 people, 253 households, and 195 families residing in the town. The population density is 8.3/km² (21.5/mi²). There are 402 housing units at an average density of 4.4/km² (11.4/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 95.80% White, 0.13% African American, 0.52% Native American, 1.05% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 2.10% from other races, and 0.39% from two or more races. 2.49% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 253 households out of which 40.7% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 58.9% are married couples living together, 13.8% have a female householder with no husband present, and 22.9% are non-families. 18.2% of all households are made up of individuals and 7.5% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 3.01 and the average family size is 3.38.

In the town the population is spread out with 34.6% under the age of 18, 7.6% from 18 to 24, 26.9% from 25 to 44, 22.7% from 45 to 64, and 8.1% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 31 years. For every 100 females there are 96.9 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 101.6 males.

The median income for a household in the town is $28,487, and the median income for a family is $31,058. Males have a median income of $25,208 versus $20,750 for females. The per capita income for the town is $11,674. 32.8% of the population and 22.4% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 46.4% of those under the age of 18 and 31.7% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.

  • Centerville -- The hamlet of Centerville is near the town center.
  • Fairview -- A hamlet on the town line in the southwest corner of the town.
  • Higgins -- The hamlet is southeast of Centerville.
  • Welsh Settlement -- A former designation for the southwest part of the town, settled in the 1840's by many natives of Wales.
