Carl and the Passions-"So Tough"

The album Carl And The Passions - "So Tough" was released in 1972 and was the nineteenth album officially released by The Beach Boys. "So Tough" was released as part of a two-album set with the 1966 album Pet Sounds. However, the new album was harshly critized in comparisons to the older album. The criticism was cited as a primary reason the album peaked on the charts at a disappointing #50.

Produced by Brian Wilson, Dennis Wilson, Carl Wilson, Mike Love, Alan Jardine, Ricky Fataar, Blondie Chaplin. Primarily produced by Carl.

Near the end of the album's sessions, Bruce Johnston decided to leave the Beach Boys for a solo career. Johnston's departure was alleged to have stemmed from an argument with the group's then-manager, Jack Reiley. The Beach Boys then removed Johnston's name from the album's production credits. Prior to his departure, Johnston recorded a basic track for his song "Ten Years Harmony," which would be rewritten and rerecorded as "Endless Harmony" on the Beach Boys' 1980 album Keepin' The Summer Alive .

"So Tough" was the first album for the Beach Boys with their new members, South African musicians Ricky Fataar (drums/keyboards/vocals) and Blondie Chaplin (guitar/vocals). The title of the album was also a reference to an early incarnation of the Beach Boys, as well as the understanding that Carl Wilson had become the leader of the group. Brian Wilson barely contributed to the album's sessions, with the exception of collaborating on three songs and singing backing vocals on "Marcella" and "You Need A Mess Of Help To Stand Alone" (Wilson's vocal contribution to the latter song has been disputed, according to various sources).

Many Beach Boys fans consider the album to be a collection of four singles due to the variation of styles. The songs are grouped as follows: Dennis Wilson orchestral works ("Make It Good," "Cuddle Up"), spiritual/TM-influenced songs ("He Came Down," "All This Is That"), the Fataar/Chaplin tunes ("Here She Comes," 'Hold On Dear Brother"), and the Brian Wilson-written singles ("You Need A Mess Of Help To Stand Alone," "Marcella").
