Carcharodontosaurus saharicus Stromer, 1931 |
Carcharodontosaurus was a gigantic carnivorous allosaurid dinosaur that lived during the Cretaceous period. It rivaled Tyrannosaurus rex in size, growing to an estimated size of 49 feet (15 meters) long.
Carcharodontosaurus was first found by Paul Sereno in North Africa. The species was dubbed Carcharodontosaurus saharicus.
This animal was once thought to have the longest skull of any of the theropods. However, the original skeletal reconstructions are now thought to be wrong, and that honour thus belongs to another huge Allosaur, the close relative Giganotosaurus.
