The California State University, Fullerton, often referred to as Cal State Fullerton, is a part of the California State University System located in Fullerton, California.

History
In 1957, Cal State Fullerton became the 12th State College in California to be authorized by the Legislature. The following year a site was designated in northeast Fullerton. It was purchased in 1959, when Dr. William B. Langsdorf was appointed as founding president, the first staff was selected and plans for opening the new college were made. Established as Orange County State College, started classes for 452 students in September, 1959. The name changed to Orange State College in July 1962, to California State College at Fullerton in July 1964, to California State College, Fullerton in July 1968 and to California State University, Fullerton in June 1972. The first permanent building, the six-story Letters and Science Building (now known as McCarthy Hall), was occupied in 1963.
Today, there is much dramatic evidence of additional, rapid growth. Several new buildings have been completed, and enrollment has climbed to more than 31,540. Since 1963 the curriculum has expanded to include lower-division work and many graduate programs, as well as numerous credential and certificate programs.

U.S. News & World Report 2004, lists Cal State Fullerton among its “Top Public Universities,” ranking it among the top 10 of the nation’s Top Public Universities-Master’s institutions in the West.
Athletics

Cal State Fullerton participates in the NCAA Division I-A Big West Conference. It is also home of the first Intercollegiate Elephant Races and a four-time NCAA's Men's Baseball College World Series champion, 1979, 1984, 1995, and 2004.
In the 2004-2005 season, the CSUF men's basketball team recorded its best season in years by posting a mark of 21 wins, 11 losses; making it to the NIT semifinals.
Special event
Mascot: The choice of the elephant as the university’s mascot, dubbed Tuffy Titan, dates to the early 1960s when the campus hosted “The First Intercollegiate Elephant Race in Human History.” The May 11 event attracted 10,000 spectators, 15 pachyderm entrants, a telegram from Richard M. Nixon and worldwide news coverage. Associated Press rated the story among the top 10 for 1962.
Other campus features
The Fullerton Arboretum is located at the northeast corner of campus. Heritage House, built in 1894 and moved to the 26 acre (105,000 m²) preserve in 1972.
Fullerton Marriott: A full-service hotel opened in 1989 on the southeast corner of the main campus in a project involving the Marriott Corp., the city of Fullerton and the university.
Branch campus and other satellites
The university’s El Toro Campus was establish in fall 2002 to provide a convenient location for students who live and work in southern Orange County. Other campus satellites include the Grand Central Art Center in Santa Ana, CSUF Garden Grove Center and facilities at the Irvine Spectrum.
