The Cairngorm Mountain Railway is 2 km long and the highest railway in the United Kingdom. It is a funicular railway which ascends the slopes of Cairn Gorm, the UK's fifth highest mountain in the wilderness of Scotland, near Aviemore in Inverness-shire. It mostly carries skiiers
Construction of the CMR started in 1999. The CMR opened on December 24 2001, forty years after the opening of the White Lady Chair Lift, which it replaced. The track has a broad gauge of 2 metres, and the two cars are powered by a stationary electrical engine. The maximum speed is 25 miles per hour and there is a passing loop in the middle. The maximum angle is 23 degrees or 1 in 2.5.
