Buzz Lightyear is a fictional character appearing in several films and cartoons by Disney and Pixar. He is a science fiction action figure, a Space Ranger of Star Command. His mission is to protect the universe from the Evil Emperor Zurg. His catchphrase is "To infinity, and beyond!" After quarrels and misunderstandings, Sheriff Woody becomes his best friend. In the fictional "show-within-a-show" backdrop of Buzz Lightyear of Star Command (the heavily merchandised TV show featuring Buzz Lightyear and his comrades), Buzz Lightyear is the son of Evil Emperor Zurg, though he is unaware of this fact until near the end of Toy Story 2, a parody of Star Wars where Luke Skywalker is unaware that Darth Vader is really Anakin Skywalker, his father, until near the end of Star Wars.
Buzz is a plastic toy with electronic voice, spring-loaded wings, laser (a blinking LED), karate-chopping arm action, and a rocket ship cardboard box. Buzz was a gift at Andy's birthday party. Buzz doesn't initially realize that he is a toy.
Buzz Lightyear has appeared in:
- Toy Story (voice by Tim Allen)
- Toy Story 2 (voice by Tim Allen)
- Buzz Lightyear of Star Command: The Adventure Begins (voice by Tim Allen)
- Buzz Lightyear of Star Command, an animated TV series (voice by Patrick Warburton).
- Finding Nemo (cameo appearance, while Nemo is looking around the room there is a Buzz Lightyear action figure laying outside the toy box)
- Cars (Lightning McQueen's tires are Lightyear brand)
Many fans have wondered, if Buzz Lightyear didn't consider himself to be a toy, why did he never move or speak when people are around?
