Buhl, Idaho

Buhl is a city located on the old Oregon Trail in the western half of Twin Falls County, Idaho. Historic U.S. Highway 30 goes through the middle of Buhl on the scenic Thousand Springs Scenic Byway. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 3,985. The self-described "Trout Capital of America," hatcheries in Buhl and the immediate surrounding area produce most of the rainbow trout consumed in the United States.

Buhl was founded on April 17, 1906. It was named for Frank H. Buhl, a major investor in a Carey Act project known as the Twin Falls South Side project, which introduced large-scale irrigation to the region in the early 20th Century.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 4.4 km² (1.7 mi²). 4.4 km² (1.7 mi²) of it is land and none of it is covered by water.

Demographics

As of the censusTemplate:GR of 2000, there are 3,985 people, 1,561 households, and 1,045 families residing in the city. The population density is 915.8/km² (2,367.1/mi²). There are 1,689 housing units at an average density of 388.2/km² (1,003.3/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 86.80% White, 0.03% African American, 0.75% Native American, 0.73% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 9.16% from other races, and 2.51% from two or more races. 15.76% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 1,561 households out of which 33.3% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 52.0% are married couples living together, 9.9% have a female householder with no husband present, and 33.0% are non-families. 29.2% of all households are made up of individuals and 17.8% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.53 and the average family size is 3.14.

In the city the population is spread out with 28.5% under the age of 18, 8.9% from 18 to 24, 24.9% from 25 to 44, 18.7% from 45 to 64, and 19.0% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 36 years. For every 100 females there are 94.7 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 88.1 males.

The median income for a household in the city is $28,644, and the median income for a family is $34,242. Males have a median income of $26,069 versus $17,069 for females. The per capita income for the city is $13,539. 14.3% of the population and 9.6% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 17.6% of those under the age of 18 and 11.2% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
