Brookfield is a town located in Madison County, New York. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 2,403.

The Town of Brookfield is located in the southeast part of the county.

History

The Town of Brookfield was established in 1795, but part was removed in 1805 to form the Town of Columbus, all this occurring while it was still part of Chenango County, New York.

Geography

The north town line is the border of Oneida County, New York, and the south town line is the border of Chenango County, New York. The east town line is the border of Otsego County, New York.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 202.1 km² (78.0 mi²). 201.9 km² (77.9 mi²) of it is land and 0.3 km² (0.1 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.13% water.

Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 2,403 people, 877 households, and 658 families residing in the town. The population density is 11.9/km² (30.8/mi²). There are 1,041 housing units at an average density of 5.2/km² (13.4/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 98.29% White, 0.54% African American, 0.25% Native American, 0.37% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.04% from other races, and 0.50% from two or more races. 0.33% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 877 households out of which 37.4% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 60.5% are married couples living together, 9.0% have a female householder with no husband present, and 24.9% are non-families. 20.1% of all households are made up of individuals and 9.1% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.74 and the average family size is 3.13.

In the town the population is spread out with 28.7% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 28.7% from 25 to 44, 23.8% from 45 to 64, and 10.7% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 35 years. For every 100 females there are 99.6 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 99.1 males.

The median income for a household in the town is $31,556, and the median income for a family is $35,915. Males have a median income of $26,462 versus $19,226 for females. The per capita income for the town is $13,719. 13.9% of the population and 10.4% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 19.4% of those under the age of 18 and 5.5% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
