Bronson Township is a township located in Branch County in the U.S. state of Michigan. As of the 2000 census, the township had a total population of 1,358.
The City of Bronson is located within the township, though it is politically independent. There are no other incorporated municipalities within the primarily agricultural township.
U.S. Highway 12 crosses the township diagonally from northeast to southwest.
Geography
The township is drained by two tributaries of the St. Joseph River: the Prairie River in the south and Swan Creek in the north.
According to the United States Census Bureau, the township has a total area of 90.0 km² (34.8 mi²). 90.0 km² (34.7 mi²) of it is land and 0.1 km² (0.04 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.09% water.
Demographics
As of the census2 of 2000, there are 1,358 people, 481 households, and 368 families residing in the township. The population density is 15.1/km² (39.1/mi²). There are 505 housing units at an average density of 5.6/km² (14.5/mi²). The racial makeup of the township is 97.13% White, 0.00% African American, 0.22% Native American, 0.07% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 1.55% from other races, and 1.03% from two or more races. 3.17% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 481 households out of which 38.9% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 64.2% are married couples living together, 7.5% have a female householder with no husband present, and 23.3% are non-families. 19.3% of all households are made up of individuals and 8.9% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.81 and the average family size is 3.24.
In the township the population is spread out with 29.2% under the age of 18, 7.7% from 18 to 24, 30.8% from 25 to 44, 20.5% from 45 to 64, and 11.8% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 36 years. For every 100 females there are 106.1 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 99.6 males.
The median income for a household in the township is $41,202, and the median income for a family is $48,289. Males have a median income of $31,552 versus $25,833 for females. The per capita income for the township is $16,223. 5.1% of the population and 3.0% of families are below the poverty line.
