Breitung Township is a township located in Dickinson County in the U.S. state of Michigan. As of the 2000 census, the township had a total population of 5,930.
The township is named after Edward Breitung, a miner and U.S. Representative from Michigan.
Communities
- The cities of Iron Mountain and Kingsford are in the southwest of the township, but are politically independent.
- Merriman is an unincorporated community in the township on Michigan State Highway 95 about seven miles north of Iron Mountain at Template:Coor dms.
Geography
According to the United States Census Bureau, the township has a total area of 176.8 km² (68.3 mi²). 168.5 km² (65.1 mi²) of it is land and 8.3 km² (3.2 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 4.70% water.
Demographics
As of the census2 of 2000, there are 5,930 people, 2,354 households, and 1,727 families residing in the township. The population density is 35.2/km² (91.1/mi²). There are 2,601 housing units at an average density of 15.4/km² (40.0/mi²). The racial makeup of the township is 98.35% White, 0.03% African American, 0.44% Native American, 0.47% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.12% from other races, and 0.59% from two or more races. 0.44% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 2,354 households out of which 31.4% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 65.2% are married couples living together, 5.3% have a female householder with no husband present, and 26.6% are non-families. 22.9% of all households are made up of individuals and 12.0% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.50 and the average family size is 2.94.
In the township the population is spread out with 24.8% under the age of 18, 5.4% from 18 to 24, 26.6% from 25 to 44, 27.0% from 45 to 64, and 16.3% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 42 years. For every 100 females there are 102.0 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 98.5 males.
The median income for a household in the township is $39,820, and the median income for a family is $47,151. Males have a median income of $40,841 versus $25,725 for females.
