Borgarfjörður, a fjord in the west of Iceland near Borgarnes seems to be rather innocent. Though this is an deceiving impression. The fjord is on the contrary a rather dangerous part of the sea because of its undercurrents and shallows.

There are a lot of flat islands lying in the fjord, but for the most part they are uninhabited.
Near Borgarnes, the hringvegur (road no.1) is passing over a bridge of 0,5 km length at the rear end of the fjord.
The land around the fjord is inhabited since the time of settlement. The action of sagas like the one of Egill Skallagrímsson is situated here.
The name of the fjord seems to come from the farm Borg which depending on the saga was founded by Egill's father Skallagrímur, who took the land around the fjord and gave the fjord accordingly this name: Borgarfjörður.
