Big Timber is a city located in Sweet Grass County, Montana. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 1,650. It is the county seat of Sweet Grass CountyTemplate:GR.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 2.5 km² (1.0 mi²). 2.4 km² (0.9 mi²) of it is land and 0.1 km² (0.04 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 3.09% water.
Demographics
As of the censusTemplate:GR of 2000, there are 1,650 people, 711 households, and 430 families residing in the city. The population density is 677.7/km² (1,752.6/mi²). There are 812 housing units at an average density of 333.5/km² (862.5/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 96.61% White, 0.00% African American, 0.79% Native American, 0.30% Asian, 0.06% Pacific Islander, 0.73% from other races, and 1.52% from two or more races. 1.70% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 711 households out of which 27.8% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 52.2% are married couples living together, 5.5% have a female householder with no husband present, and 39.5% are non-families. 34.7% of all households are made up of individuals and 19.4% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.24 and the average family size is 2.92.
In the city the population is spread out with 23.7% under the age of 18, 6.6% from 18 to 24, 23.2% from 25 to 44, 23.7% from 45 to 64, and 22.8% who are 65 years of age or older.
