Berrien County is a county located in the state of Georgia. As of 2000, the population is 16,235. The county's county seat is Nashville, Georgia6. Berrien County was created 25 February 1856 out of portions of Coffee, Irwin and Lowndes counties by an act of the Georgia General Assembly.
Geography
According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,186 km² (458 mi²). 1,172 km² (452 mi²) of it is land and 14 km² (5 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 1.17% water.
Demographics
As of the census2 of 2000, there are 16,235 people, 6,261 households, and 4,539 families residing in the county. The population density is 14/km² (36/mi²). There are 7,100 housing units at an average density of 6/km² (16/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 85.48% White, 11.43% Black or African American, 0.26% Native American, 0.30% Asian, 0.08% Pacific Islander, 1.53% from other races, and 0.92% from two or more races. 2.37% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 6,261 households out of which 34.90% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 56.20% are married couples living together, 11.70% have a female householder with no husband present, and 27.50% are non-families. 23.60% of all households are made up of individuals and 10.00% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.57 and the average family size is 3.03.
In the county the population is spread out with 27.20% under the age of 18, 8.60% from 18 to 24, 28.70% from 25 to 44, 22.90% from 45 to 64, and 12.50% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 35 years. For every 100 females there are 96.50 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 92.80 males.
The median income for a household in the county is $30,044, and the median income for a family is $34,643. Males have a median income of $25,559 versus $19,790 for females. The per capita income for the county is $16,375. 17.70% of the population and 14.60% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 25.40% of those under the age of 18 and 13.00% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
