Bennington County is a county in the state of Vermont. As of 2000, the population is 36,994. Its county seats (known as shire towns) are Bennington & Manchester6.

Geography
According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,755 km² (678 mi²). 1,752 km² (676 mi²) of it is land and 4 km² (1 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.21% water.

Demographics
As of the census2 of 2000, there are 36,994 people, 14,846 households, and 9,917 families residing in the county. The population density is 21/km² (55/mi²). There are 19,403 housing units at an average density of 11/km² (29/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 97.75% White, 0.42% Black or African American, 0.20% Native American, 0.62% Asian, 0.01% Pacific Islander, 0.21% from other races, and 0.80% from two or more races. 0.93% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 14,846 households out of which 30.50% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 53.10% are married couples living together, 10.10% have a female householder with no husband present, and 33.20% are non-families. 26.80% of all households are made up of individuals and 11.60% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.41 and the average family size is 2.91.
In the county, the population is spread out with 23.70% under the age of 18, 7.70% from 18 to 24, 26.30% from 25 to 44, 25.70% from 45 to 64, and 16.70% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 40 years. For every 100 females there are 92.20 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 87.90 males.
The median income for a household in the county is $39,926, and the median income for a family is $46,565. Males have a median income of $31,982 versus $23,632 for females. The per capita income for the county is $21,193. 10.00% of the population and 7.00% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 13.40% of those under the age of 18 and 7.90% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
