BELLSOUTH BUILDING ATLANTA
The BellSouth Building is a 206-meter (676-foot), 47-story skyscraper in Midtown Atlanta. It was completed in 1982. It is the corporate headquarters of telephone giant BellSouth whose employees refer to it simply as 'The Tower'. It is also the last building in Atlanta over 200 meters (660 feet) tall.
The company, then called Southern Bell, originally planned to build it just down the street. However, the historic Fox Theatre would have been destroyed, an especially great loss to the city after the Lowe's Grand was torn down. Tremendous opposition, protests, fundraising, and petition drives within the community prevented its demolition. Even Liberace spoke out on behalf of the "Fabulous Fox".
The architects who built it were Skidmore, Owings & Merrill LLP and Rosser International, Inc.
