Beacon Falls is a town located in New Haven County, Connecticut. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 5,246.
Beacon Falls has a Metro North railroad station on the Waterbury branch of the New Haven line. Settlers from Derby, Connecticut settled Beacon Falls in 1678. The town was incorporated in 1871 on lands carved from the neighboring towns of Bethany, Seymour, Naugatuck and Oxford.
Geography
According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 25.6 km² (9.9 mi²). 25.3 km² (9.8 mi²) of it is land and 0.3 km² (0.1 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 1.01% water.
Demographics
As of the census2 of 2000, there are 5,246 people, 2,032 households, and 1,450 families residing in the town. The population density is 207.1/km² (536.6/mi²). There are 2,104 housing units at an average density of 83.1/km² (215.2/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 96.97% White, 0.72% African American, 0.08% Native American, 1.03% Asian, 0.04% Pacific Islander, 0.40% from other races, and 0.76% from two or more races. 2.13% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 2,032 households out of which 34.1% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 58.2% are married couples living together, 9.5% have a female householder with no husband present, and 28.6% are non-families. 23.0% of all households are made up of individuals and 6.3% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.58 and the average family size is 3.08.
In the town the population is spread out with 25.2% under the age of 18, 6.5% from 18 to 24, 35.1% from 25 to 44, 23.6% from 45 to 64, and 9.6% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 37 years. For every 100 females there are 100.6 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 96.5 males.
The median income for a household in the town is $56,592, and the median income for a family is $62,461. Males have a median income of $41,696 versus $34,844 for females. The per capita income for the town is $25,285. 5.9% of the population and 4.2% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 9.8% of those under the age of 18 and 4.6% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
