According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 9.3 km² (3.6 mi²). 9.2 km² (3.6 mi²) of it is land and 0.1 km² (0.04 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.56% water.
Demographics
As of the censusTemplate:GR of 2000, there are 17,350 people, 8,342 households, and 4,588 families residing in the CDP. The population density is 1,881.7/km² (4,874.7/mi²). There are 10,121 housing units at an average density of 1,097.7/km² (2,843.6/mi²). The racial makeup of the CDP is 89.87% White, 3.98% African American, 0.38% Native American, 1.25% Asian, 0.10% Pacific Islander, 2.34% from other races, and 2.09% from two or more races. 8.22% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 8,342 households out of which 19.0% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 41.0% are married couples living together, 9.7% have a female householder with no husband present, and 45.0% are non-families. 38.2% of all households are made up of individuals and 22.5% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.07 and the average family size is 2.69.
In the CDP the population is spread out with 17.9% under the age of 18, 7.6% from 18 to 24, 25.1% from 25 to 44, 20.1% from 45 to 64, and 29.3% who are 65 years of age or older.
