It was formed in 1900 in Dallas, Texas as University of Dallas Medical Department. It allied with Baylor University in Waco, Texas in 1903 and moved to the Texas Medical Center in Houston, Texas in 1943.
In 1969, Baylor College of Medicine separated from Baylor University under the direction of Dr. Michael E. DeBakey. Currently, it is led by Dr. Peter Traber, formerly of GlaxoSmithKline.
Currently, 168 medical students join the medical school each year, 75% of which are from Texas. Baylor College of Medicine ranks 12th in the U.S. News and World Report rankings.
Baylor College of Medicine is affiliated with many hospitals in the Texas Medical Center including Michael E. DeBakey Veteran's Affairs Hospital, Texas Children's Hospital, Ben Taub General Hospital, St. Luke's Hospital, and the Texas Institute for Rehabilitation and Research. In April 2004, Baylor College of Medicine ended their affiliation with The Methodist Hospital as their primary teaching hospital, primarily due to disagreements over the goals of the college's plan for a new ambulatory care center. The two institutions continue to have an affiliation, though a weaker one.
Baylor College of Medicine is also home to a Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences. Currently, 489 graduate students are enrolled in fourteen different PhD programs in a variety of fields, including Molecular Biology, Biochemistry, Computational Biology, and Immunology, among others.
