Banks County is a county located in the state of Georgia. As of 2000, the population is 14,422. As of July 19, 2004 the county's government consisted of Three member county commission, with one being the Chairman of the Commission. Kenneth Brady is the Commission Chairman, Rickey Cain and Pat Westmoreland are the other two members. The Sheriff is Charles Chapman. The Coroner is Tommy Herbert. The Magistrate Judge is Henry David Banks. The Probate Judge is Betty Thomas. The Clerk of Court is Timothy Harper. The county's county seat is Homer, Georgia6.
Geography
According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 606 km² (234 mi²). 605 km² (234 mi²) of it is land and 1 km² (0 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.09% water.
Demographics
As of the census2 of 2000, there are 14,422 people, 5,364 households, and 4,162 families residing in the county. The population density is 24/km² (62/mi²). There are 5,808 housing units at an average density of 10/km² (25/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 93.16% White, 3.22% Black or African American, 0.30% Native American, 0.60% Asian, 0.06% Pacific Islander, 1.96% from other races, and 0.71% from two or more races. 3.42% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 5,364 households out of which 35.60% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 65.40% are married couples living together, 7.90% have a female householder with no husband present, and 22.40% are non-families. 19.20% of all households are made up of individuals and 7.70% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.69 and the average family size is 3.06.
In the county the population is spread out with 26.20% under the age of 18, 8.90% from 18 to 24, 30.70% from 25 to 44, 23.70% from 45 to 64, and 10.50% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 35 years. For every 100 females there are 102.00 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 99.70 males.
