Bandera, Texas

Bandera is a city located in Bandera County, Texas. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 957. Its estimated population as of July 2002 was 1,087. It is the county seat of Bandera CountyTemplate:GR. Bandera calls itself the Cowboy Capital of the World. The city is home of Arkey Blue's Silver Dollar, a famous Hill Country Honky-Tonk. The city is about one hour west of San Antonio, and is just on the edge of the city's suburban sprawl. On Sunday mornings, Bandera is a popular destination for motorcyclists from San Antonio.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 3.0 km² (1.2 mi²). 3.0 km² (1.2 mi²) of it is land and none of the area is covered with water.

Demographics

As of the censusTemplate:GR of 2000, there are 957 people, 408 households, and 239 families residing in the city. The population density is 315.8/km² (820.2/mi²). There are 488 housing units at an average density of 161.0/km² (418.2/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 94.98% White, 0.21% African American, 0.52% Native American, 0.00% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 2.51% from other races, and 1.78% from two or more races. 21.84% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 408 households out of which 24.5% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 43.4% are married couples living together, 11.3% have a female householder with no husband present, and 41.4% are non-families. 34.1% of all households are made up of individuals and 16.2% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.22 and the average family size is 2.86.

In the city the population is spread out with 21.5% under the age of 18, 6.7% from 18 to 24, 23.5% from 25 to 44, 23.2% from 45 to 64, and 25.1% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 44 years. For every 100 females there are 83.3 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 82.3 males.

The median income for a household in the city is $31,089, and the median income for a family is $36,500. Males have a median income of $27,604 versus $17,813 for females. The per capita income for the city is $16,502. 15.3% of the population and 11.0% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 18.0% of those under the age of 18 and 17.1% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
