Bærum is a municipality in the county of Akershus, Norway. Bærum is located on the coast, west of Oslo. Sandvika is the administrative centre of Bærum.
Located just to the west of the Oslo(7 minutes by car), Bærum is in many respects regarded as a suburb. Many technology oriented companies are located at Lysaker and Fornebu [1] (http://www.itfornebu.no/).
Built-up areas such as Slependen, Sandvika, Kolsås, Høvik, Lysaker, Stabekk, Bekkestua, Haslum, Hosle, Eiksmarka, and Østerås can be said to have grown together with Oslo. However, they are not typically urban districts in the strictest sense.
Although Bærum is in many eyes regarded as a prototypical affluent suburb to Oslo, Bærum certainly has a history and identity of its own. Its history includes iron industry embodied in Bærums Jernverk founded in the 1700s. Bærum has got a lot of outlying field, such as Krokskogen in Lommedalen. Bærum has two stone churches from the 1100's. The Henie-Onstad Art Centre, founded by Sonja Henie and her husband Niels Onstad is an well-known art museum and architectural center located at Høvikodden.
A local football team, Stabæk I.F., played in the Norwegian premier league (2004), but were relegated at the end of the 2004 season. They are currently doing well in the 1.division, and will probably get promoted to Norwegian premier league at the end of this season.
Bærum is known by Norwegians to be the 'Wealthy part of Norway'.
The population in this part of Norway ("Bæringer") are often referred to as snobbish, and sometimes mockingly referred to as "blæringer", or bladders. A lot of the publicly known "rich people" live in Bærum, such as wealthy business-people. Large parts of the attitude is due to the fact that there are many newly rich in this community and many wealthy families deliberately settle in this area. Bærum is also among the top three richest municipality in the country. In 2001, the gross income per inhabitant 17 years and over was 341 600 kr. The country's gross was 243 900 kr which is almost 100 000 kroners less.
