Aviva is the world's seventh-largest insurance group and the biggest in the UK. It is one of the leading providers of life and pensions products to Europe and has substantial businesses elsewhere around the world. The company was formerly called CGNU (Commercial, General and Norwich Union). The company uses the Norwich Union name in the United Kingdom.
Its main activities are long-term savings, fund management and general insurance. It has premium income and investment sales of £30 billion, and around £240 billion of assets under management. The group has 56,000 employees serving 30 million customers worldwide. Aviva plc is the holding company of the Aviva group of companies, which carries out life assurance and long-term savings business, fund management and all classes of general insurance. It also invests in securities, properties, mortgages and loans, and trades in property.

Aviva trademark dispute
When the company announced that they are to known as Aviva, they forgot that a local boutique near their Norwich office is also called Aviva after the manageress' name. It was an embarrassing mistake made by the company, however no action has been taken.
