Avala is a 511 meters high mountain located southeast of Belgrade, Serbia and Montenegro.
The name "Avala" comes from the Arabic word havala, which means "pretty view". In the Middle Ages, the town of Žrnov was located on Avala. The mountain has been protected since 1859. The mineral avalite receives its name from this mountain in which it was found. A 195 meter high Avala TV Tower was constructed on Avala in 1965, and bombed in 1999. There are plans for its reconstruction.
