Automatic for the People is an album released by R.E.M. in 1992, by Warner Brothers. It sold in excess of 15 million copies. It is their eighth studio album.
In 1997 Automatic for the People was named the 18th greatest album of all time in a 'Music of the Millennium' poll conducted by HMV, Channel 4, The Guardian and Classic FM. In 1998 Q magazine readers placed it at number 3.
According to an investigation, reporters say that when Kurt Cobain committed suicide in 1994, the album he listened to before he died was "Automatic For The People" by R.E.M.
