Aurora, Oregon

Aurora is a city located in Marion County, Oregon. It was named by Dr. William Keil (1811 - 1877) who founded the community after his daughter. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 655.

History
After a railway connected Bethel, Missouri with the outside world, Dr. Keil decided to take his followers and flee Bethel for a new location. In 1855 he travelled to the Northwest, and after spending a dismal winter on the Willapa river in present-day Washington state, Dr. Keil bought two square miles on Deer Creek, a tributary of the Pudding River, and rebuilt his Christian Socialist commune in 1856. Aurora was incorporated as a city soon after. Upon his death, the communal possession of the lands was ended, and title of the lands distributed amongst the inhabitants, although for some decades afterwards Aurora was noted for its German heritage
For many years, Aurora was another business center for the farmers of its portion of the Willamette Valley, but beginning in the 1980s a number of antique stores opened in the old city center, and now form the principal commercial activity of the city.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 1.2 km² (0.4 mi²). 1.2 km² (0.4 mi²) of it is land and none of the area is covered with water.
Demographics
As of the censusTemplate:GR of 2000, there are 655 people, 250 households, and 186 families residing in the city. The population density is 562.0/km² (1,441.8/mi²). There are 262 housing units at an average density of 224.8/km² (576.7/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 94.20% White, 0.46% African American, 0.61% Native American, 1.07% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 1.98% from other races, and 1.68% from two or more races. 6.26% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 250 households out of which 31.6% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 62.4% are married couples living together, 7.2% have a female householder with no husband present, and 25.6% are non-families. 19.6% of all households are made up of individuals and 9.2% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.62 and the average family size is 3.01.
In the city the population is spread out with 24.4% under the age of 18, 7.0% from 18 to 24, 27.8% from 25 to 44, 27.6% from 45 to 64, and 13.1% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 41 years. For every 100 females there are 105.3 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 98.0 males.
The median income for a household in the city is $55,938, and the median income for a family is $65,556. Males have a median income of $45,938 versus $29,444 for females. The per capita income for the city is $24,839. 1.6% of the population and 0.0% of families are below the poverty line.
