Augusta - Richmond County is a consolidated city-county that includes Augusta, Georgia and almost all of Richmond County, Georgia. As of the 2000 census, the balance of the city-county (including everything except Hephzibah, its only other municipality) had a total population of 195,182.
Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the balance has a total area of 793.8 km² (306.5 mi²). 782.5 km² (302.1 mi²) of it is land and 11.3 km² (4.3 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 1.42% water.
Demographics
As of the censusTemplate:GR of 2000, there are 195,182 people, 72,307 households, and 48,228 families residing in the balance. The population density is 249.4/km² (646.0/mi²). There are 80,481 housing units at an average density of 102.8/km² (266.4/mi²). The racial makeup of the balance is 44.91% White, 50.37% Black or African American, 0.27% Native American, 1.52% Asian, 0.12% Pacific Islander, 1.02% from other races, and 1.78% from two or more races. 2.79% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 72,307 households out of which 33.5% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 41.5% are married couples living together, 20.8% have a female householder with no husband present, and 33.3% are non-families. 27.9% of all households are made up of individuals and 8.5% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.55 and the average family size is 3.13.
In the balance the population is spread out with 26.8% under the age of 18, 12.0% from 18 to 24, 29.9% from 25 to 44, 20.4% from 45 to 64, and 10.9% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 32 years. For every 100 females there are 93.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 89.7 males.
