Arden is a small community located along the Tygart River in Barbour County in north central West Virginia. Previously built up along a railroad track, the community exists between two landmark rock formations: Hell's Gate and Devil's Den. Many whitewater enthusiasts travel the shallow rapids of the Tygart River through the pristine valley. The area is also home to an incredible number of native wildflowers. Arden is one of two communities so named in the state. It was named in 1775 by the Quaker Jacob Moon after the district of Arden in Warwickshire, England.
