Andes is a town located in Delaware County, New York. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 1,356.
The Town of Andes formerly contained a village with the same name. The town is on the southeast border of the county.

History
Settlement began in 1784. The town was formed in 1819 from the Town of Middletown. In 1845 in an Anti-rent War, protesters, several hundred dressed as "Calico Indians," shot and killed Under-Sheriff Osman Steele, when he and deputies attempted to collect overdue rent of about $64. Hundreds protestors were arrested and two were sentenced to death, but their sentences were later commuted.
Geography
The south town line is the border of Ulster County, New York. Andes is partly in the Catskill State Park.
According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 291.5 km² (112.5 mi²). 282.5 km² (109.1 mi²) of it is land and 9.0 km² (3.5 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 3.07% water.
Demographics
As of the census2 of 2000, there are 1,356 people, 604 households, and 381 families residing in the town. The population density is 4.8/km² (12.4/mi²). There are 1,326 housing units at an average density of 4.7/km² (12.2/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 96.90% White, 0.44% Black or African American, 0.29% Native American, 0.59% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 1.03% from other races, and 0.74% from two or more races. 1.92% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 604 households out of which 20.4% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 53.3% are married couples living together, 5.8% have a female householder with no husband present, and 36.8% are non-families. 31.8% of all households are made up of individuals and 14.6% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.25 and the average family size is 2.77.
In the town the population is spread out with 18.4% under the age of 18, 6.3% from 18 to 24, 21.4% from 25 to 44, 32.4% from 45 to 64, and 21.6% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 48 years. For every 100 females there are 104.8 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 107.7 males.
The median income for a household in the town is $35,119, and the median income for a family is $39,474. Males have a median income of $28,074 versus $22,847 for females. The per capita income for the town is $20,650. 9.4% of the population and 6.1% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 14.4% of those under the age of 18 and 6.8% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
