Overview
The band's name literally translates (from Latin) as Fallen Emperor. It is taken from the name of a sculpture (by Norwegian sculptor Olav Orud) representing a shattered Emperor dragonfly.
Formed in 1993 by Nikolai (Nikko) Kleppe, Henrik Brautaset Aronsen and Tollef Ladehaug, they made the first few compositions using Henrik's old computer, an Amiga 500. By the autumn of 2001 Anax had added a new member to the group: Per Christian Nilsen who is the sound engineer and technical consultant both in the studio and in a live setting. Originally an EBM-related band, they have during the years incorporated gothic moods and harmonies into their music, and added more danceable rhythm elements and more complex structures.
Anax Imperator emphasise multimedia in their live shows. They have used video installments, computer animations, installations, masks and theatrical effects. Topics of their lyrics range from the overtly political ("Life vs Itself", "Silent War") to elegies of sorts, like "Life In Vein", which was made after the deaths of two friends at the hands of drug abuse.
