Amrozi bin Nurhasyim
|
Amrozi bin Nurhasyim (born July 5, 1962), native of East Java, also known simply as Amrozi, is an Indonesian who was convicted for his part in the 2002 Bali terrorist bombing. His seemingly nonchalant demeanor throughout his trial has earned him the nickname "The Smiling Assassin".
Amrozi was allegedly motivated by the radical Islamic and anti-Western ideology espoused by Jemaah Islamiah. On August 7, 2003, he was found guilty of his role in the bombings and sentenced to death, however, the law used to convict him was used retrospectively, and was ruled illegal by the Indonesian high court in July 2004. He is currently in Denpasar's gaol.
