American Muslims Intent on Learning and Activism
|
American Muslims Intent on Learning and Activism (AMILA) is an American Islamic organization founded in 1992. The acronym "AMILA" means "to work" or "to act" in Arabic. Their stated goals are spiritual enrichment, intellectual freedom, and community service. Founded by American-born and/or raised Muslims, AMILA was meant to supplement the activities of local mosques and Muslim organizations with events and projects of interest to the American Muslim community. Considered by many to be one of the first liberal/progressive Muslim institutions, AMILA has emphasized religious pluralism and respect between branches of Islam, equal roles for women in all phases of its operations, and concern for social justice.
Key AMILA projects include a monthly gathering held on the second Saturday of each month, an annual Ramadan Spiritual Retreat that is held for a few days at a remote location, and an "Eid for Everyone" gift drive that provides toys to local Muslim children during the Ramadan holiday season. AMILA's mailing list AMILAnet features vigorous, polite discussion and counts among its members Muslim leaders, newsmakers, intellectuals, and community activists.
AMILA's prison program is on hiatus until further notice.
