Alsip, Illinois

Alsip is a village located in Cook County, Illinois. As of the 2000 census, the village had a total population of 19,725. It is a suburb of Chicago.
Alsip was settled in the 1830's by German and Dutch farmers. The village is named after Frank Alsip, the owner of a brickyard that opened there in 1885. The village began to growth after the Tri-State Tollway was built there after World War II.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 16.9 km² (6.5 mi²). 16.5 km² (6.4 mi²) of it is land and 0.4 km² (0.2 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 2.45% water.
Demographics
As of the censusTemplate:GR of 2000, there are 19,725 people, 7,536 households, and 5,011 families residing in the village. The population density is 1,195.6/km² (3,098.5/mi²). There are 7,756 housing units at an average density of 470.1/km² (1,218.3/mi²). The racial makeup of the village is 81.64% White, 10.09% African American, 0.15% Native American, 2.10% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 3.22% from other races, and 2.76% from two or more races. 8.76% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 7,536 households out of which 34.3% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 49.0% are married couples living together, 13.1% have a female householder with no husband present, and 33.5% are non-families. 28.6% of all households are made up of individuals and 11.2% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.61 and the average family size is 3.26.
In the village the population is spread out with 26.4% under the age of 18, 9.0% from 18 to 24, 32.5% from 25 to 44, 20.9% from 45 to 64, and 11.1% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 34 years. For every 100 females there are 93.4 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 89.5 males.
The median income for a household in the village is $47,963, and the median income for a family is $54,846. Males have a median income of $42,233 versus $31,395 for females.
