Alexandria, Minnesota

Alexandria is a city located in Douglas County, Minnesota. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 8,820; after a recent annexation the population is at least 10,020. It is the county seat of Douglas County6. The city has a museum housing the controversial Kensington Runestone, which is thought by some to indicate that Vikings had visited the area in the 14th century. Alexandria is located near Interstate 94 (twinned with U.S. Highway 52 in this part of the state), along Minnesota State Highway 27 and MN-29.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 24.2 km² (9.4 mi²). 23.0 km² (8.9 mi²) of it is land and 1.2 km² (0.5 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 5.02% water.

Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 8,820 people, 4,047 households, and 2,011 families residing in the city. The population density is 383.1/km² (992.5/mi²). There are 4,311 housing units at an average density of 187.2/km² (485.1/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 97.94% White, 0.42% African American, 0.34% Native American, 0.57% Asian, 0.06% Pacific Islander, 0.18% from other races, and 0.50% from two or more races. 0.80% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 4,047 households out of which 23.7% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 36.5% are married couples living together, 10.4% have a female householder with no husband present, and 50.3% are non-families. 41.1% of all households are made up of individuals and 19.3% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.06 and the average family size is 2.81.

In the city the population is spread out with 20.0% under the age of 18, 15.7% from 18 to 24, 24.0% from 25 to 44, 16.7% from 45 to 64, and 23.5% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 37 years. For every 100 females there are 87.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 83.7 males.

The median income for a household in the city is $26,851, and the median income for a family is $38,245. Males have a median income of $27,871 versus $20,254 for females. The per capita income for the city is $16,085. 13.3% of the population and 7.8% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 14.2% of those under the age of 18 and 15.7% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
