Akiak is a city located in Bethel Census Area, Alaska. As of the 2000 census, the population of the city is 309.
Akiak means " the other side" because the Eskimos used the Yukon River basin crossing during the winter. Located on the west bank of the Kuskokwim River.
Geography
Akiak is located at 60°54'36" North, 161°13'6" West (60.910082, -161.218282)Template:GR.
According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 7.9 km² (3.1 mi²). 5.1 km² (2.0 mi²) of it is land and 2.8 km² (1.1 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 35.62% water.
Demographics
As of the censusTemplate:GR of 2000, there are 309 people, 69 households, and 54 families residing in the city. The population density is 60.6/km² (157.2/mi²). There are 76 housing units at an average density of 14.9/km² (38.7/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 4.85% White, 0.00% Black or African American, 92.88% Native American, 0.00% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.00% from other races, and 2.27% from two or more races. 0.65% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 69 households out of which 53.6% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 43.5% are married couples living together, 20.3% have a female householder with no husband present, and 21.7% are non-families. 18.8% of all households are made up of individuals and 4.3% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 4.48 and the average family size is 5.24.
