RjLesch, I've made some clarifications and additions here, mainly to better account for the situation in countries other than the US. Soccer teams in Europe compete in many different competitions, so any trophies won in any competition should be mentioned. Secondly, your unspoken assumption that all elite-level sporting competitions are professional is surprisingly not yet universally true (for instance, Gaelic Football players are unpaid).
A couple of points I'd like to raise:
- What about national sporting teams in sports where international competitions are important (rugby union, soccer, cricket)?
- What about lower-level sporting teams? I don't see any reason why minor league teams can't fit into this schema, even if the top-level teams are the first priority.
- Instead of the term "franchise" which is an Americanism, could you use "club" (though that's probably not used much in the US), or "team" for the name of this wikiproject?

- in all, I'd defer to those who know more about sports outside the USA than I do.
- Re: "team" versus "franchise" versus "club": I would retain "franchise" for the National Football League, and go with whatever the correct local usage is for each sport/country/association, etc. "Club" is used interchangeably with Baseball/Major leagues.
- Re unpaid players: In theory, we have a similar situation with college sports in the USA; those are supposed to be unpaid also :-). So, agreed it's a consideration.
- Re minor leagues and lower-level teams: Agreed that it's worth attention; I wanted to get the baseball stuff done in time for the World Series and the football stuff done in time for the Super Bowl, so that was admittedly my focus.

- WRT team/franchise/club, what I was proposing is merely that you rename this wikiproject the "WikiProject Sports Team Listing". Obviously, use the correct local usage for individual teams. My reasoning is just that team might be universally recognised, but many unfamiliar with US sports might not know what a sports "franchise" was.
- wrt lower-level teams, of course you're going to work on whatever you think is most important, and major-leage/elite teams are probably of greatest wide interest. I'm merely suggesting that whilst our primary goal might be complete coverage of elite teams, lower-level teams should be covered using the same conventions. --Robert Merkel

The current formatting used for sports team listings are not as good as they should be. I've changed a few of these articles before RickK informed me about this page so I think I should discuss any further changes here before I continue. I propose to change these articles in the same sort of vein as Chicago Blackhawks. The current formatting used in other articles does not make appropriate use of headers, and point-style formatting should not be used for introductory material, IMO. What do all of you think? I've made the first few steps in formatting Japanese Baseball teams. I've made progress with the Yomiuri Giants and Chunichi Dragons to date.

Templates for abbreviation
In some leagues, abbreviations exist for team names. For example, LA in the context of Major League Baseball refer to the Los Angeles Dodgers, while the same context in the National Hockey League refer to the Los Angeles Kings.
Some pages require the repeated inclusion of team names or abbreviations or logos, so let us propose a series of template pages that can help us do all the gruntwork. I propose something along the lines of Template:NHL-CHI for CHI. Then we can use {{subst:NHL-CHI}} to include it where we need it.
