"Nationality" of the pictures

Today, 18 May 2005, I did a little statistical research on this page, on the nationality of the pictures chosen to illustrate each day. They are:

  1. United States 12 (1 picture not related to a bolded article)
  2. Germany 3 (1 picture not related to a bolded article, 2 pictures related to Nazi Germany), United Kingdom 3 (2 pictures not related to a bolded article), France 3
  3. Japan 2
  4. Cambodia 1 (1 picture not related to a bolded article), Ireland 1, Greece 1, Jordan 1 (1 picture not related to a bolded article), Portugal 1, Soviet Union 1
  • 1 article science-related
  • all-America picture

This means that 40% of the images are U.S.-related.

Then, re-calculating the same statistics for the 25 February gives:

  1. United States 13
  2. United Kingdom, Japan 2
  3. Ethiopia, France, Germany, Greece, Indonesia, Italy, Pakistan, Poland, Soviet Union, Uganda, Vietnam 1
  • science-related 2

Hey, User: Panairjdde, wanna do the stats for March ?
Done.--Panairjdde 13:25, 18 May 2005 (UTC)

Excuse me, Panairjdde, is this a complaint ? Are you less unhappy about the images in March ? Or in May so far ? Hmmm... I can only say that I do put in some efforts to diversify, and I would avoid using images of middle-aged white males (we have too many ! ... regardless of nationality) if an alternative can be found. Often, there aren't much to choose from. (The use of a logo of some space mission sometimes means that I've given up searching that day.) Copyrights and resolution/appearance at 100px are additional problems that need to be considered .... To suggest images, please make use of the SA talk page for each day. Thanks. -- PFHLai 01:12, 2005 May 20 (UTC)

P.S. You may want to check out Wikipedia:WikiProject Countering systemic bias.

No, it was just that I had nothing to do, so I decided to count the Nationality rather than genre, and choose April because May is still a work in progress. Actually I did the count for March too, after request. This is English wikipedia, so I espect to find a high percentage of US and UK-related images, as well as many more baseball-related images that any other sports. This is not a problem for me, is it for you all? Frankly, I don't understand why Miracle onIce gets an image (22 February), and Dolly the sheep doesn't, but it is a matter of taste.--Panairjdde 11:08, 20 May 2005 (UTC)
It was the 25th anniversary of Miracle on Ice this year. Let them have it for 2005. :-) Dolly's pic is back now. -- PFHLai 13:05, 2005 May 20 (UTC)
