Pong is credited with ushering in the video game era.
- May 24: Magnavox unveils the Odyssey at a Burlingame, California convention. Nutting Associates sends Nolan Bushnell to see it, as they thought their system was the only one in existence. Bushnell reports back unconcerned with the competition.
- Atari founded by Nolan Bushnell and releases Al Alcorn's Pong arcade game
- Hunt The Wumpus video game developed by Gregory Yob while at the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth
- Nakamura Manufacturing Ltd. begins using Namco brand name
