1922 Modern Art Week

1922 Modern Art Week was an event performed in Brazil in the year 1922. The main objective of this event was to launch a new concept of art in the country.
Until 1922, classical and romantic art styles imported from Europe were the only kind of art in Brazil. Then, in 1922, young artists (some coming from Europe, some working in Brazil) reunited and organized the Art Week.
Some artists of the Week were seen as mad people by the audience. And those artists tought that this kind of misunderstanding was the main proof of triumph of the Week: they did not want to show people what people used to see. They wanted to show new stuff.
After the end of the Art Week, Modernist artists divided in two groups: The Anthropophagics and The Nationalists.
Anthropophagics wanted to take art from foreign countries, suffer the influence of European and USA artists, and then, freely create their own art works. (thus the term anthropophagy: they would "eat" all influences, digest it, and throw out new things).
The Nationalists wanted no foreign influences, and sought a "purely Brazilian" form of art. This group was led by writer Plínio Salgado, who later become a fascist political leader (Brazilian Integralism) and was arrested by dictator Getúlio Vargas after a failed coup.pt:Semana de arte moderna de 1922
