An Éored is a cavalry unit of the Riders of Rohan in J.R.R. Tolkien's Middle-earth. The number of Riders one contained varied anywhere between one- and two thousand.
At the Battle of the Pelennor Fields, three Éoreds were present, each composed of 2,000 Riders (6,000 in all).
Roughly a third of the Rohirrim died in the battle. When departing for the last battle at the Black Gate Éomer, now King of Rohan upon Theoden's death in the battle, decided to reform the 4,000 surviving Riders into two Éoreds of two thousand Riders. One stayed behind to help guard Minas Tirith, while Éomer led the remaining Éored to the Black Gate as part of Aragorn's Army of the West.
