The symbol ª is the feminine ordinal indicator, used in Portuguese, Spanish and Italian, and also an ordinal indicator in Esperanto. It is a superscript a, which is the feminine adjective ending. "Primera" (meaning "first"), for example, is written as 1ª or 1a, the same way it is written in English as 1st.
The World Wide Web Consortium and the Unicode Consortium have deprecated the use of the character ª whenever superscript markup is available.[1] (http://www.unicode.org/reports/tr20/) For example, in XHTML 12a
should be used instead of 12ª
.
The following requires the presence of certain fonts, likely to be present in a computer with Microsoft Windows installed.
