Sanpete County, Utah

Template:UTcounty Sanpete County is a county located in the state of Utah. As of 2000 the population was 22,763 and by 2004 was estimated at 23,649. It was possibly named for a Ute Indian chief named San Pitch, which was corrupted to Sanpete. Its county seat is Manti and its largest city is Ephraim6.

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 4,151 km² (1,603 mi²). 4,113 km² (1,588 mi²) of it is land and 38 km² (15 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.91% water.

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 22,763 people, 6,547 households, and 5,067 families residing in the county. The population density is 6/km² (14/mi²). There are 7,879 housing units at an average density of 2/km² (5/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 92.43% White, 0.31% Black or African American, 0.87% Native American, 0.48% Asian, 0.36% Pacific Islander, 4.06% from other races, and 1.49% from two or more races. 6.63% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 6,547 households out of which 43.40% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 67.00% are married couples living together, 7.20% have a female householder with no husband present, and 22.60% are non-families. 17.80% of all households are made up of individuals and 10.10% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 3.27 and the average family size is 3.68.

In the county, the population is spread out with 33.20% under the age of 18, 16.40% from 18 to 24, 21.80% from 25 to 44, 17.80% from 45 to 64, and 10.80% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 25 years. For every 100 females there are 102.40 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 100.90 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $33,042, and the median income for a family is $37,796. Males have a median income of $30,527 versus $19,974 for females. The per capita income for the county is $12,442. 15.90% of the population and 10.40% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 13.90% of those under the age of 18 and 9.60% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
