LaPorte, Indiana

LaPorte is a city located in LaPorte County, Indiana, and is also the county seat. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 21,621. LaPorte is located in northwest Indiana, east of Gary, and was first settled in 1830.

Geography

LaPorte is located at 41°36'33" North, 86°43'3" West (41.609057, -86.717567)Template:GR.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 31.5 km² (12.2 mi²). 29.7 km² (11.5 mi²) of it is land and 1.8 km² (0.7 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 5.83% water.

Demographics

As of the censusTemplate:GR of 2000, there are 21,621 people, 8,916 households, and 5,545 families residing in the city. The population density is 728.4/km² (1,886.8/mi²). There are 9,667 housing units at an average density of 325.7/km² (843.6/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 92.60% White, 1.92% African American, 0.37% Native American, 0.38% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 3.39% from other races, and 1.33% from two or more races. 6.52% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 8,916 households out of which 29.8% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 45.4% are married couples living together, 12.3% have a female householder with no husband present, and 37.8% are non-families. 31.9% of all households are made up of individuals and 14.4% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.36 and the average family size is 2.98.

In the city the population is spread out with 24.5% under the age of 18, 9.6% from 18 to 24, 29.1% from 25 to 44, 20.3% from 45 to 64, and 16.7% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 36 years. For every 100 females there are 93.5 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 90.1 males.

The median income for a household in the city is $35,376, and the median income for a family is $45,784. Males have a median income of $32,319 versus $22,756 for females. The per capita income for the city is $17,900. 11.0% of the population and 7.7% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 13.2% of those under the age of 18 and 13.1% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.

Features

The LaPorte Community School Corporation has one high school (LaPorte High School), two middle schools (Boston Middle School and Kesling Middle School), and eight elementary schools (Crichfield, Hailmann, Riley Handley, Indian Trail, Kingsbury, Kingsford Heights and Lincoln). The LPCSC contains approximately 6,500 students.

LaPorte has one daily newspaper, the Herald-Argus.

Radio stations in LaPorte include WCOE, 96.7 FM, and WLOI, 1540 AM. LaPorte receives its television broadcasts from nearby Chicago, Illinois and South Bend, Indiana.
