The Romans called it Iamnia. After the destruction of the Second Temple in 70 CE, Rabbi Yochanan Ben Zakkai moved the Sanhedrin to Yavne. The infrastructure developed here enabled the continued existence of the Jewish people for nearly 2000 years.

The crusaders called the site Ibelin, and built a castle there in 1141. The namesake Ibelin family was an important noble family in the Kingdom of Jerusalem and later in the Kingdom of Cyprus. Ibelin itself was captured by Saladin in 1187.

The Palestinian village of Yibna was depopulated during the 1948 Arab-Israeli War; the modern Israeli site of Yavne is close by.
